About
D.R.E.S. Tha BEATnik — Divine Real Essence of Sound — was born Andre K. Lett on November 28, 1973, in Philadelphia. A master beatboxer, emcee, and event host, DRES became one of Atlanta's most defining forces in hip-hop culture. His voice, energy, and vision shaped stages, communities, and careers across nearly three decades.
Career
After relocating to Atlanta, DRES established himself as the heartbeat of the city's underground hip-hop scene. From 2002 to 2008, he curated the World Famous Mic Club at Club Apache — a platform that deeply influenced underground narratives and foreshadowed mainstream portrayals, mirroring the ethos behind the film 8 Mile.
In 2002, he made history with the EP Have Mic...Will Travel, the first fully beatbox-produced album, cementing his status as both a musician and vocal innovator.
DRES became the signature voice behind the legendary Fantastic Fridays at Atlanta's revered MJQ Concourse, sharing the mic with DJ Lord of Public Enemy, DJ Majestik, and DJ Fudge. Under his stewardship, Fantastic Fridays ran for 19 years — a near two-decade legacy that fused old-school and new-school hip-hop and elevated the MC role from host to immersive performer. It earned him the title of "the #1 Live Concert Host in the U.S."
Throughout his career, DRES hosted and emceed major culturally significant events including:
Art, Beats, & Lyrics National Tour
A3C Hip Hop Festival
BeReggae Music & Arts Festival
World Famous Mic Club at Apache Cafe
Fantastic Fridays at MJQ
Digable Planets Reunion Tour
OneMusic Fest

DRES brought his presence to screen as well as stage. Select credits include:
Step Off (2011) — Feature film, role of "Mighty Mouth"
Interscope Presents: The Next Episode (2003) — Reality MC battle series, appearing as himself across three episodes
Do It!: A Documentary (2008) — Music and culture documentary
Spring & 3rd: The Story of the Yin Yang Café (2021) — Atlanta-focused documentary
STAR (Fox, Season 1) — Lee Daniels' drama series, appearing as himself hosting an open mic jam session
Art, Beats & Lyrics
Since 2008, DRES served as the national tour host of Art, Beats & Lyrics — a nationally touring multimedia art and music exhibition celebrating visual artists, musicians, and cultural innovators with a deep emphasis on urban, hip-hop, and contemporary Black culture.
In 2024, he was featured in the Art, Beats & Lyrics documentary on Hulu. That same year, Essence magazine featured him in an interview with Rapsody marking the tour's 20th anniversary.
remembrance
DRES Tha BEATnik was more than a performer — he was a cultural curator, educator, and guardian of hip-hop heritage. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens remembered him as "a unifier, a creative force, and a true champion of Atlanta's hip-hop and arts community." Killer Mike called him "a cornerstone of Atlanta, hip-hop, and underground culture." Questlove, Big Gipp, and countless others mourned the loss of a man whose warmth and impact were felt far beyond any stage.
Despite a lengthy battle with chronic kidney disease, DRES remained open and graceful with his community throughout. He passed away on June 9, 2025, at age 51, with his fiancée by his side.
His memory lives on in murals — including one in Atlanta's Cabbagetown neighborhood — and in the countless creatives he mentored, uplifted, and inspired. His dedication to storytelling, unity, and musical innovation continues to resonate across Atlanta and beyond.
